I was told that it was roughly based on The Supremes, but I am not totally sure.

I believe the movie is based on the 1980s broadway musical with the same name starring Jennifer Holiday. I'm not sure whether it's based on the Supremes or not. It could be a fictional depiction of the girl groups of the 60s like "The Five Heartbeats" was a fictional depiction of the guy groups of the same era.
