an atom with one or more electrons stripped away is a positive ion. an ionic compound is two or more atoms that that are bound but share one or more electrons in the bound. ionic bonds are weaker than normal compound bonds because the attraction is based on positive and negative charges of the atoms that are negatively charged or positivly charged. Salt is an excallent example.

when a metal and a nonmetal bond.
the metal gives up or loses electrons to a nonmetal, thus both become ions. Metal being + and nonmetal being -.
+ and - are highly attracted to each other therefore a very strong bond giving them higher melting points etc.
