My 4 year old daughter wants a pet fish. We are getting her a small 2 gallon tank. I know I dont want no guppies. Can someone suggest a pretty fish that would be ok in a 2 gallon tank and good for a 4 year old.

I have a Crowntail Betta (very pretty and Hardy fish....they come in many colors). Bought mine at Pets Mart.

Here are some pictures:

Goldfish is a HORRIBLE first time fish, period.

One Betta fish is the way to go. They are super easy to take care of and if taken care of properly can live 2+ years. They don't need a lot of room, so a two gallon tank is perfect for them. Don't get more than one. They will fight. Even a male with a female.

BTW, the male bettas are the ones with the long flowing fins. But, your daughter doesn't have to know that. ;)

Goldfish get 6 to 8 inches long and need at least 10 gallons per fish
2 guppies (Two male guppies would not cause trouble for you )
or a Betta

I would probably go with a goldfish. But definitley ask the store attendant which kinds are the most hardy. Also, check to see how big the fish will get, because it will have to be a pretty small goldfish.

You could also try Zebra Danios, as I have had good luck with them. If you choose them though, get a reliable heater, as the only problem I've ever experienced is that they get too cold and die. Also just feed them one flake a day, so this will be easy for your daughter to remember.

How about a goldfish or coy fish. These two species are pretty hardy and survive with pretty low maintenance. You just have to remember to scrape the glass from algae, feed them once a day, top up the tank with medium warm water when it evaporates from the heat of the light, and do a thorough tank cleaning about every six months- where you take out the fish and put them into a separate bucket or pool of water while you rinse the sand or gravel, spray out the tank, and scrub any algae and muck down with a pressure nozzle on your hose. Do not use any soap because this could kill your fish.

Get her a Betta fish. That's a very pretty fish (usually blue or red) that would do great in a tank that size. My daughter loves hers! It's super simple to take care of. Goldfish are very dirty fish (they eliminate alot of waste) and even one will grow too large for your tank. Stick with the single betta.

A beta. You can find them almost anywhere and the males are beautiful. The only draw back is that few other fish do well with them. But they also co habitate with a dwarf frog and that would also be nice for your 4 year old

get her 2 gold fish. They are pretty and easy to care for - a good start for a 4 year old because they aren't too fussy about temperature and food and cleanliness.
Although I would suggest you clean and replace at least 1/2 the water every 1 or 2 weeks, and keep it at room temperature (72), and don't feed them too much. They are greedy and make a mess. Keep them just a bit hungry so they eat it all when you feed them. you will know you are over feeding if your water gets murky or there's lots of gunk in the bottom.

I don't think a 4-year-old should have a real fish as a pet. They should be content going to the aquarium.

On the other hand you may have an extremely mature kid, very careful about her each and every step. In that case, maybe a goldfish.
