I think I know what she was trying to say, but she was off. A C cup in a 34 and a B cup in a 36 are actually close to the same size. The measurement around of the band part of the bra (how to explain it..the circumference of the bra excluding the cup part) is different though. The 36 is obviously bigger, and the 34 is smaller. They're not the exact same size. If someone who typically wore a 34C put on a 36B bra it might be the right size or close in the cup part, but the band part of it would be loose and too large. In other words, she doesn't know what she's talking about. Hope you understood that. lol I had a hard time finding the wording there.
EDIT: To your recent additional question, the answer is that there is no exact size equivalent to a 38C. A 38C is a 38C and buying another size wouldn't fit you as well. I'll say it again. The sales lady you spoke with didn't know what she was talking about. If you wear a 38C then you need to buy a 38C. I wear a 34D and once tried buying a 36C because 34Ds are hard to find, and although the cup sizes were close, it was too loose in the band part.

36B is actually the equivilent of a 34D, because the band size and cup size both add up to 38 inches. It doesn't mean they will both fit just as well, but you should get a reasonable fit with either size. Also a C cup of a 32C is smaller than the C cup on a 34C, wierd I know lol.
If you are 38C, you may also find that a 36DD fits. HTH : )

From what I know, she is wrong. The 34 or 36 is the measurement around your body under your arms. The B or C is the cup size, C being larger than B. So a 34C is for a thinner person with a larger breast. The 36B is for a heftier person with a smaller breast.

Yes. A 36B may sound smaller than a 34C, but they are really the same size. The cup size gets larger as you go up, but once you go up to the next set, you have to compesate for the smaller body size so the cup is smaller. Essentially, they are the same size, all though there may be some variations here and there.

I kinda had the same problem at VS. I was looking for a 36D and the sales girls tried telling me that if I bought a 38C there's no real difference. I walked out with no bra needless to say. Then I had the same problem again, only this time the girl said I was a 34DD and insisted that I wasn't a 36D. Must be some sales scheme at all VS stores. Buy what fits, not what THEY say fits.

The number is your chest size measured all the way around, front to back and the letter is the cup size. Sometimes you could get away with a different number if you're between sizes. I hope that answers the question.

It's not the same size. The number measurement is the distance underneath your breasts around your back, and the letter is the size of your actual breasts. Wearing a 34 instead of a 36 is like wearing a dress in UK10 instead of 12!!!
