Have you thought about pay per click programs? The two biggest, I think, are Yahoo! and Google
A few free resources – check out the sources box for links:
1) Create a blog pertaining to your field
2) Use Yahoo! Local & Yahoo! Groups – Be sure to read the TOS for each one!
3) Write articles pertaining to your field and/or expertise.
4) Advertise on Craiglist
Also, consider signing up for an affiliate program. These programs enable you to advertise on other's sites (your affiliates) and once a sale is made to you, your affiliates & the program are paid a commission.
I listed a few handy sites & articles relating to marketing, promotion & advertising. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Pay per Click is a good idea, also try Looksmart search engine.
Look on the net for similiar but not exact websites that already have a listing, preferably on the first or second page. If you can contact the webmaster and ask for a link exchange.
If you want to email me with your web address, I will look at the site and if it is something that is compatible with mine, I will consider a link exchange. Most webmasters will not charge. So it is free advertising.
Please put Yahoo in your subject line, so I know it is not spam

The two largest search engines are Google and Yahoo! Both work differently, however, google ranks its pages by using a crawler. It searches through other web pages looking for links. So if you could have other web sites linking to your web site, you will rank higher. Yahoo! uses Meta tags and keywords. For this your have to code the tags in your HTML page. Whether you are using FrontPage or Dreamweaver, you are going to have to insert key words on your index page. That way when someone types in keywords in a search engine, chances are they'll bring up your site. This is called SEO, Search Engine Optimization. Also you have to go to each search engine, I think there are over 10 popular ones, and list them in each search engine. This, however, won't guarantee you a high listing. That's the SEO that does that.
