That site was was chosen and The United States donated the land (which was a run down slum originally) So to say that it is a tax burden is bulls hit. It enhances the neighbourhood creating a real estate dream. The number of jobs supported by the tourism and employees is huge. Taxi fares, hotel, restaurants it helps the New York economy. If only the host country and her allies would listen to the advice of the UN as it is supposed to not go off half ****** there would be no problem. As for your military being backed up, Iraq was not a UN sanctioned war, while Afghanistan has UN support and has more than 6 UN nations participating.

The U.N. is a step towards world peace, apparently you like people dying, that makes you psychotic which you should talk to a psychiatrist about.
The U.N. is calling the U.S. a bully and brain dead because from our actions in the Middle East, we appear to be. The U.S. completely disregarded the policies of the U.N. to go to war with Iraq, which was an increidibly idiotic decision.
The U.N. is a wonderufl system that has a few troubles working, but if ALL the countries involved (including the U.S.) did what they are supposed to the world would be a much better place. The U.N. provides a platform for overall global council, being able to talk to the vast majority of all the countries in the world at one time is good for overall diplomacy especially in this very global dya and age.
If you do not support the U.N., you are ignorant and short sighted. You only want what is best for you at this moment. When the U.S. falls as a superpower due to its current idiotic actions you'll regret saying this and want to be part of the U.N. to recieve benefit and have your voice heard in internationl diplomacy.

Pragmatically; for the short term, yes.
In the long term, no.
If enough people in this country supported isolationism, we might be able to pull off a U.N. withdrawal. But much like Iraq, withdrawal from such a place is a double-edged sword.
And besides, isolationalism is a waning concept what with globalization in the midst. U.N. keeps us involved with international interests, particularly trade.

The UN has become useless in recent years. They are all talk and little action. The Oil for Food Scandal is enough of a reason for us to leave! Their "peace keepers" rape little girls! Lets give them more money, great idea! Koffi simply despised the US. The UN has assumed a position opposite the US in an attempt to restore the balance lost by the ending of the cold war. Their system is defunct and anyone who supports the UN is either anti-American or completely ignorant. I say 'F' um, lets remind them who they are screwing with and withdraw. They simply cannot continue to be a viable organization without the most powerful nation as a member, not that they are viable anyways.

In a perfect world the U.N. would be disbanded and a new organization would be built. This one would have only democracies banding together. Why should we(the U.S. taxpayers) continue to fund the majority of the budget of an anti U.S. organization. Why give the likes of Hugo Chavez a forum to attack us on our soil and our dime?Unfortunately, until our leaders get some ba.. um I mean guts, the UN is as good as it gets so I must say no. At least not yet.

No. At least we have license to do what we want when other countries ignore UN resolutions. We just enforce what they won't.
As for the tax idea, maybe we should have the UN pay property taxes at current market rates to NYC, assuming they don't do so already.

We need to get out of the UN.
And as for that tax paid directly to them? They can pound sand into the 4th point of contact.

I think it's important to remember that the U.S. is the single biggest influence in the U.N. Therefore, if we decry the U.N., we are, to some extent, decrying the U.S.
I also think it's disingenuous to complain about the cost of our U.N. dues while we're spending $2,000,000,000/week in Iraq.
Diplomacy may be slow, and sometimes vexing, but I think the one thing Iraq has taught us is that the absence of diplomacy is ofter far more brutal and expensive.

Oh and that would make us look even better. Then they would think we were going to start plotting some scheme to take over the world, and they'de group together and start a war... or not.
