Start with a thesis statement. Never start with a question. In fact, do not use questions in essays unless they are for a creative writing class.
Your thesis/main idea is why you are proud to be an American. This nation was founded on some very basic principles: liberty, justice, freedom of religion, etc. Its present character was created from the Melting pot of culture that came as a result if immigration. This is a country where we take care of our poor, we cherish diversity. We may have our faults, racism, prejudice, governmental corruption.
With all that said, this is still the first country that many others die trying to reach. They come in leaking boats, stowaways in airplane landing gear, etc. It is here that you can criticize the government, get a reasonably priced college education, travel from state to state without restriction, and have the hope of ....you name it!
If you don't know why you should be proud, ask an immigrant!

Answer the question and set direction
You start by answering the essay question and then set the direction of the essay by starting an argument.
You can use the format TEEL
T topic - the point of the paragraph
E explanation - explaing the point
E evidence - for example a quote or evidence
L link to the next paragraph
Hpe this helps as this format has helped me trhough school.
If you stick to the TEEL for every paragrapgh you can't go wrong.
Remeber the essay is just your voice on the paper. Don't stress and just transcript your voice and opinions on the paper.
GOOD LUCK

First you need to decide why you are proud to be an American. I would come up with three reasons. Say something along these lines... "America is the greatest country in the world. I can't imagine living anywhere. The United States of America is the ____________ (fill in your adjective here) for the following reasons: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and a McDonald's on every corner. Each of these make me proud to be an American."
Each paragraph after that (3 in total) should address one of your reasons. So the 1st paragraph is going to explain freedom of speech, 2nd paragraph freedom of religion, and 3rd paragraph a McDonald's everywhere you turn. Be sure to give specific examples. Lots of vivids. Last paragraph (#5) is going to summarize the paper. Restate your thesis.
Without knowing what grade your in -- that's probably the simplest form of essay. IM me if you need more help!

Any essay should begin with a hook, something that will grab the reader's attention. Perhaps: I'm proud to be an American. Or maybe something that you love about America. Just make sure it grabs the reader's attention without sounding retarded, like what that girl whose answer is above me told you to do.
