The two are entirely different in their function. The wireless card is actually a part of the laptop, and allows the laptop to connect to wireless networks. The wireless router is entirely seperate - it is used if you want to set up your own wireless network in your home.

If you want your computer to be able to use wireless, but don't want to set up a wireless network in your home, then you only need the wireless card. If you want your own wireless network in your home then you need both.

As far as companies, get the wireless card that is included with the Dell laptop. For the router, Netgear or Linksys are the best options available on the market.

Keep in mind that the most wireless card have the similar speed and don't confuse the packets that you are receiving from your provider is what makes the biggest difference.

To receive the signal from your router to your PC or Wireless item is the signal speed. You can have a fast router signal:(excellent) and have a poor internet browsing speed because your provider is sending you back small amount packets from their servers.

Hope now you understand the difference.
