I live out in the NJ suburbs. It's beautiful; I live in a big house with a huge lawn where deer and all other types of woodland creatures graze. However, the school I go to is in NYC. As is the internship I will have this spring. As is the job I will eventually have. Because I don't want to live in NYC, I commute over 4 hours round trip every day. I woke up at 5:30 yesterday morning to take a final at 9. I leave my school at 4 and don't get home until nearly 8. I encounter idiot commuters on a daily basis who get in my way and then refuse to move.
What's the point of this ramble? Most people are too damn lazy to commute, so they move into apartments the size of my linen closet and consider themselves lucky.

I hear what you're saying, and I never could. But New York is a unique, diverse and thrilling place in which so many great things are available to you in such a short distance. I think that's why some people choose to live there and put up with the congestion. I'm a suburban boy, though. And I prefer the country much more than the city, though my family is there and it's a blast to visit on occasion.

Different strokes for different folks. I don't understand why people build a million dollar home right next to a busy main road. If I had that much money, I would have a smaller place plus a few achers or so out in the country.
You couldn't pay me enough money to live IN NYC -- it's not for me. But, there are people that couldn't think of living anywhere else. Go figure.

Cities are monkey hives. We're the monkeys who've adapted to working in groups for survival.
