The daughter of Zeus, Pallas Athena, had competed with her uncle, the sea god Poseidon, over who will extend their domain over the city of Athens. They agreed that, whomever should give the people the finest gift should add the city to his domain. Poseidon gave the people a well, but it produced salty water. Athena then gave them the olive tree, which provided them with wood, oil and food, so the Athenians chose Athena.

Athena. I think it was when she and Poseidon were arguing over who got the city of Athens. Poseidon...I don't even know what he offered the citizens. She said, hey, here's an olive tree!

So they took the olive tree and named themselves "Athens" after Athena. I don't know what they were called before.

There was probably an olive tree near the Acropolis (has the Parthenon, Athena's major temple) but I doubt it's the same one now. The original Parthenon is blown up, but the exact model is in Nashville, TN and it was built before some dumba$$ Greeks used the Parthenon as a munitions storage building when they were fighting Turkey. A cannonball went in the Parthenon and blew up the gunpowder kegs inside--BOOM!
