The author provides a number of clues in the story to help you determine the setting.

He says his brother is the craziest brother a person can have but not crazy like old Miss Leedie who is in love with President Wilson (Woodrow Wilson US President from 1913 to 1921.) Toward the end of the middle of the story, it says "the summer of 1918 was blighted."

The author says the smell of the graveyard flowers drifted across the cotton fields in paragraph 1. Later he mentions Aunt Nicey, a southern term to refer to help (often African American) who cared for the family, then he talks about palmetto fronds, pines, rubber grass, and watching them float away to the sea, and swamps. Look at southern geography to see where you might find palmetto fronds, cotton fields, and see what states qualify. You won't have too many choices.

This is a powerful story because the author plants the clues, but you must make the meaning. It is rich in symbolism that lets you see the swamp, the barn, the tree with the scarlet ibis. When you put the clues together you have enough information to draw some excellent conclusions. Good luck.

It never really said. But you knew that the main character lived in the south somewhere judging by the dialogue and what his family believed, and I'm assuming since his brother died in the end at such a young age, that it was a while ago like may the 1930's or 40's, before medicince got really good. I hope it helps!
