It depends, for instance if you go with Virgin mobile, then decide that you want a contract with let's say, Verizon, then yes you will need a new phone because even though both companies are CDMA, they dont allow phones not sold by them on their network.

now if you get a Verizon prepaid phone, then decide to go monthly, then all you have to do is call CS..

now you can port your number from a prepaid company to a post paid one, it's really easy.. all you have to do is call 611 from your prepaid phone, then get your account number so you can port. the new company will know what to do with the account number and your current number.

the final suggestion i could desire to supply you...is to examine what provider supplies the final coverage at domicile (because of the fact your thinking disconnecting the domicile telephone) and in the components the place you holiday/artwork. Now, bear in mind, ALL providers have components of vulnerable to no coverage --yet you do desire to compliment the single that is going to supply your maximum good coverage at domicile --you won't be in a position to unload your landline and not have good cellular coverage. once you have chanced on the provider giving the final coverage on your desires, then evaluate their plan/settlement ideas etc. i even have faith which you will detect a plan to in shape your desires with any provider --it must be approximately coverage first. Say a provider has a plan it is only $10.00 a month and no settlement --it is all nicely and good, yet what good is it to you in case you haven't any longer have been given any coverage? i wish this facilitates
