I would like to know what my score would be as an SAT score. I got a 58 on the critical reading section, 49 (meh) on math, and 61 on writing skills. My selective index says 168. I have read that you can add ten to each one and get an estimation of what the SAT score would be like, but that would end up 1680. Wouldn't that be kind of bad, considering it's out of 2400? The sheet I have makes it look like I did good, I am above average on all sections (just barely on math, though). This is just all very confusing, please help?

I would really appreciate it if you guys could actually answer my question instead of telling me that I did bad. I wanted to know if a 1680 is what my SAT score would have been. The 1680 is leaving out the essay, and I dont know how much that is worth. So, please dont waste our time and just answer the question.

Above median (not above average) is 51st percentile and up, and that's not considered "good" on the SAT. The scores you reported are on a 20 to 80 scale.

There used to be an easy calculation from PSAT to SAT because the question types were almost the same, but times have changed, and so have the tests.

Now, the PSAT has:

- 13 Sentence Completions and 35 Critical Reading questions in the Critical Reading section
- 28 multiple choice and 10 Grid-In questions in the Math section
- 14 Identifying errors, 20 Improving Sentence and 5 Improving Paragraph questions in the Writing Section

The new SAT has a similar breakdown in Critical Reading and Grid-Ins, and the levels of English and Math are not that higher, so you can translate your scaled score upward by multiplying by 10. You cannot predict your percentile (performance compared to the median score) this way because the test population changes dramatically. And not to your benefit. Expect your percentile rank to fall unless you practice your test-taking.

The writing skills section is very different between the two tests, so don't try a simple calculation. The main difference is that on the new SAT, you have to write a short essay. It's worth about a third of the Writing score. Your performance on the PSAT writing section can be a helpful predictor of your performance on 2/3 of the SAT writing, but there's no cast-iron guarantee.

Your question about whether a 1680 on the 600-2400 SAT would be "kind of bad" brings up what you're measuring. Your scaled score is of little interest to colleges. They mainly want to see your percentile rank - how well you performed in comparison to your grade cohort.

You can check out admissions data - often including SAT score ranges - in several publications. There's an annual US News & World Report college admissions guide that has some good informatoin. I have also found the Princeton Review and ACT websites handy for this information. Links below.

Happy testing!

Don't worry. The PSAT is NOT an indicator of what you will score on your SATS. (I believe their is much luck involved.) Yes, you add a zero onto 168, for the equivalent of SAT.
I scored 183. (boo-hoo)
You may be above average (I was in the 89 percentile, meaning that 11 people out of 100 score better than me, but that doesn't mean anything because HS juniors score pretty low. (The avg. SAT is 1500/2400)
The PSAT will just tell you what you need to work on-- (the critical reading is a horror!... sometimes you just don't have enough time to read the passage...)
I took the Dec. 2 SATs, and scores are coming back on Dec 21! I hope I did well...

For you: review a few good books (the big blue one is really helpful), and maybe a few classes (I took Rev. Prep--> wasn't too helpful though!!!)

Hope this helps!

It's a way better score then I got and some of friends got a score close to you and the teacher said it was good. Just try a little harder but don't stress yourself out. Just do the best you can.
