Kokoro is the most common Japanese word for heart. It can also mean the figurative heart such as "the heart of the family".

if you are talking about the red thing that pumps blood, then you would want 'shinzou' if you want like a love heart shape heart, its just the katakana 'haato'.
If you want like 'i love you from the bottom of my heart'
you would want kokoro eg. kokoro kara aishite imasu.

I live in Japan and I say 'haato'.(*^o^*)
ex. My heart. = Watashi no haato.
