I see this all of the time and just don't understand the concept of aluminum foil on a tree. It looks very tacky. Do other countries do this?

I live in Orange County, CA, and have seen this in some of the lower income areas, but don't understand the meaning behind it. Usually it is a large tree trunk that is wrapped with foil from about a foot up to the top of the trunk. Then they wrap a big velvety (is that a word) ribbon around it.

It *is* tacky.
And no, nobody else does this. Only your tacky neighbours. =)

I've never seen it where I live (the Midwest), but it sounds like a good idea because the foil would really reflect the lights on the tree and any other lights in the area. Plus, it would add some shine, and I imagine is pretty cheap and easy to do.

People use tinsel or foil to imitatate ice. Foil looks cold and gives the illusion of winter.
I don't know if people outside the U.S. buy tinsel (strips of foil) for their tree or not.
Watch me get thumbs down for this but ...I think Christmas trees and all the junk on them are tacky. I'm not jewish but I prefer candles and mistletoe.

... and which races do this..?? I live in the UK and have never seen such a thing from any race... and even if they did do it here it is not affecting me whether it is tacky or not.
I happen to think artificial trees, different coloured tinsles and houses lit up with a million xmas lights are tacky but each to their own... and does it really matter in the greater scheme of things??

According to John Matthew's The Winter Solstice, an anonymous German citizen that year recorded trees being decorated with "roses cut out of many colored paper, apples, wafers, gold-foil, [and] sweets.

it's an old fashion tradition to use tinfoil as a decoration. It adds a bit of shininess.
it's probably not an ethnic thing, but a family tradition.
who knows, there might be someone out in your neighborhood who thinks your decorations are tacky.
*why say "certain races"?

Is this done just at Christmas? Some people do this to stop squirrels from climbing there trees and getting into the attic.

well i have never seen it either but putting people down doesn't help at all, on top of that your trying to say it's a black thing. if you can't help someone don't even talk about them. why don't you give them some money ? sense you are on the high income bracket.

Some people cannot afford real decorations so they improvise.
