Writing and journalism have been my passion my whole life. My degree is actually in journalism. I've just realized that this is REALLY it, but I know it is going to require a lot of work. As a magazine publisher, I get to report again and write my own stories. I know that magazine publishing is a complex business and it is also very risky, but it's my dream and I'm going to do it. I'd just love to get some advice from you guys on ways to get started.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Publish Your Own Magazine, Guide Book, or Weekly Newspaper: How to Start Manage, and Profit from a Homebased Publishing Company by Thomas A. Williams
* Starting & Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine (4th Edition) by Cheryl Woodard
* How to Start a Magazine by James Kobak
* Producing Successful Magazines, Newsletters and E-Zines: Great Ideas, Practical Help, and Straightforward Guidance…by Carol Harris

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

If I were you I would not open a gift shop. Instead I would capitalize on what's going on around your town and the skills you and your husband can bring to your business to make it successful. If there is a lot of construction activities going on I would think about opening a business that would support those new businesses and restaurants opening up. They all need printing which your husband knows how to do. If printing is totally out of the question you can open an alternative business like prinitng brokerage. You do the calling and selling and your husband can do the printing or (or if a printer broker ) contact the local printing shops and arrange some deals with them to get paid a commision for any business you bring their way.

I would start with a outline of the company... i.e. plan out your income and expenses, what it would cost to start up the company, whether you have a clientele list established, will you be able to get a start up loan.

There are many open questions that need to be answered before opening your own business. My suggestion would be to sit down with a financial analyst first.
