I believe Dilbert defined work as "things we'd rather not do, that's why they have to pay us".
Living with less is the ideal; but for most of us, the materialism created by Marketing (other people trying to make money), we always want more, better, bigger... We work because we want to live in a house and eat food not found in the wild. But then you get a TV, and the idea of needing something you really just want get placed, and soon you think you have to slave away for it. And perhaps also with the hope that the bigger house/faster car will win you friends, admiration, sex. It takes a huge amount of self-confidence and discipline to actually live with less, and I don't think most people have the self-esteem to really not care enough about what other people think to make it happen. Most people also just don't perceive any other option because they never see anyone actually living simply, or they do and just laugh at the "hippie" without realizing the hippie may actually be happy.

4 the $. For basic needs, food, shelter, health care. And if there is anything left, maybe some luxury things. People are by nature greedy. If not driven by greed, then at least to possess some of the better things in life. A bigger shelter, tastier food, etc. Communism only works for a limited time, even in the poorest of countries. People want to exceed their basic needs.

Because having those things makes us happy, or at least most of us believe that it does. So choosing to work for them seems to be not as bad as not having them. But then, not everyone who doesn't have money works to get those things. Some steal, others con people out of them, etc.

Because some of take pride in supporting ourselves and our families; and in our accomplishments like contributing to the quality of life in this world. If you are willing to settle for raising your children in poverty, feel free.

I work because my family likes to eat and wear clothing. Sleeping outside in the winter really sucks too.
