Looking into some "abstract" strategy games. I want something that really uses your brain and not mere luck. (If it had a sci-fi/alien theme that would be great too but I guess then it wouldn't be abstract. And all the sci-fi games I've seen are battle-based, and therefore more luck based?) I'm thinking about Zertz or Hive, what do you think?

I've not played Hive, so I'll give you my biased review of Zertz.

It's a tremendous strategy game. There are multiple events taking place each turn (removal of marbles, placement of marbles, reduction of the game "board"), all of which directly impact the decisions you are making. Add in multiple victory conditions, and this game can turn into a real brain-burner.

Best option: take the opportunity to play both of them online and see which one you prefer before going out and spending the money!

As others have stated, none of them are that fine for technique video games. I, myself, love technique video games at the PC, however I even have an xbox 360. Playing a technique recreation on a console simply has a particularly one of a kind think to it. I do not consider its that fine, however for those who needed to get her a console, I'd say an xbox 360 might be the nice guess. It has technique video games like command and triumph over three, Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth two, and Halo Wars, which comes out soonish.
