Spiritgid has a couple of good points, but the structural factor is rather inconclusive. All window manufacturers worth their "salt" have to pass certain testing to market their products. These engineering and test results can be obtained upon request from the manufacturer or vendor. Correctly installed, I`d put a vinyl up against a wood any day of the week. If you want the wood look , there are a few manufacturers that provide a wood look interior.

Vinyl, like any plastic, changes with time, and it does not provide very good structural properties. I would recommend wood frame windows, but with either a vinyl cladding outside (like Anderson) or metal cladding (like Weather shield or Pella). Those give you zero maintenance outside, wood class inside and you are not using plastic as a structural component. I would also suggest using low-e glass which adds a fair amount of thermal efficiency and UV protection.
If price is a big part of the decision- no question, vinyl is cheaper. I design and build custom homes. We never use vinyl is these, but occasionally do in remodels or low-cost housing.

I'd go with the vinyl. They are low maintenance. For the sunny side of the house try and get the Low E glass. It cuts down on the amount of heat in the summer coming in, and going out in the winter.
