i mean, seriously, last year about 29000 people applied to Harvard. but this year, i heard about 36000 people applied. dont they know space is limited?

More people are applying to college. A college degree now is what a high school diploma was 40 years ago. And everyone wants to get into the best (even if they realize they aren't qualified). Also, decades ago, Ivies such as Yale and Harvard admitted only men, mostly upper-class white males (think George W. Bush). The Ivies have to be more selective because more students are competing for a limited number of spots.

Because high schools are teaching less and have less exacting standards. More people apply because they think they're good when they're really just mediocre.
