I'm going to start reading these books. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions as to what order I should read them in. I picked up The Hobbit today. Is that right? Thanks!

The Hobbit comes first. It was written years before "The Lord of the Rings," and is actually a children's book. TLOTR is a trilogy and is at an adult level. The books, in order, are: 1. "The Fellowship of the Ring;" 2. "The Two Towers;" 3. "The Return of the King."

Yes, read the Hobbit first. (It's a little slow in places, so don't give up on the other books if you don't like it). Then read The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

Then read the Silmarillion - it provides all the ancient mythology and history behind Middle Earth. It may not be as interesting to you until you've read the other books and fallen in love with the whole Tolkien world.

Yes, definitely start with The Hobbit, then read the other books in order.

Most certainly. After reading, that and the lord of the rings trilogy, you will see a lot of nuances that you wouldn't understand if you didn't read the hobbit first. to say they are "children's" books is incorrect the books are way better than the movies

Yes, though it's not necessary to read The Hobbit. The actual LOTR trilogy goes Fellowship, Two Towers, Return of the King.

Do not, I repeat, do not, listen to anyone who cannot spell "boring" correctly.
That said, Tolkien's books are among the most important literary works of our times. I also suggest "The Atlas of Middle Earth." by Karen Wynn Fonstad. Definitely read the books, and watch the movies, but understand that the movies are Peter Jackson's personal take on J.R.R. Tolkiens masterpiece, and many things are changed, left out, or added in that do not occur in the books. Don't get me wrong, the movies are wonderful, and the best version of LotR yet, but they are not the books.

Yep, read The Hobbit before the trilogy. If you don't you won't have the full story.
