James Earl Ray, because he was a white supremacist. I believe he was threatened by the empowerment he saw King's words causing in the black community. He was also just a bad guy in general, an escaped convict.

I think there was a connection between Dr. King's assasination, Robert Kennedy and JFK's assasinations. The 60's were very turbulent, especially in so far as civil rights, the Vietnam "War" and the peace movement/anti-Vietnam protests on college campuses went.

Luther's health declined in the years before his death. In December 1544, he suffered from severe angina and finally suffered a heart attack which led to his death in February 1546.
