All the books say don't do it because we're NOT SURE of the effects it will have. We ARE sure that binge-drinking will adversely affect the fetus (you've seen those people with un-developed hands and like 2 fingers? Yeah don't get drunk while you're pregnant.) But people in Europe commonly have a glass or half a glass of wine with dinner (the color of the wine is not an issue) and it is said to relax the mother, which I must agree, it does, but I wouldn't say to do it all the time. Doctors have said, you may have one beer a night. Wow. And I know a woman that did just that. And her daughters are brilliant. Pretty much what you have to do when you're pregnant is go with your instincts. Don't overdo ANYTHING whether it's alcohol or watermelon, you need to be balanced. But if a glass of wine is the only thing that will stop you from having a total freakout once or twice? G'head.

Some doctors say that an ocassional glass of wine will "probably" not harm the fetus, but they will warn you that there is no safe amount of alcohol to drink while pregnant. They are making some great N/A beverages now, try an N/A Amaretto Sour/Sweet very tasty.

Some cultures believe that one glass of red wine a day is good for a pregnant women, it helps with circulation. Most cultures are strictly against drinking any alcohol while pregnant. It all depends on your personal beliefs I guess. I personally would not drink at all.

Yeesh, what a slew of lousy answers. "Scare tactics worked on me! I can't think for myself...! I can't even spell 'alcohol,,' let alone answer this question correctly, but here's something to feel bad about!"
Yeah, small amounts are fine.
"The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists recently conducted a large study including 400,000 American women, all of whom had consumed alcohol during pregnancy. *****Not a single case of fetal alcohol syndrome occurred and no adverse effects on children were found when consumption was under 8.5 drinks per week.*****
A recent review of research studies found that fetal alcohol syndrome only occurs among alcoholics. The evidence is clear that there is no apparent risk to a child when the pregnant woman consumes no more than one drink per day."
from http://www.stratsplace.com/rogov/wine_expect_mother.html
"As revealed by contributing editor Thomas Matthews in the August 31, 1994 issue of the "Wine Spectator" magazine which was devoted largely to this controversy, "there is even new *****research that shows that moderate drinking during pregnancy may actually help the development of the child after birth".*****
...Feeling even more strongly, Dr. Michael Samuels of New York City's Doctor's Hospital says that *****the data has been "turned around for the purpose of frightening women"*****..."

It depends on how much you drink. I don't think a glass every now and then would hurt but you shouldn't risk it because you never know how it can effect the baby, its not worth it. you should also ask your Dr. I know PLENTY of people who have done much worse while they were pregnant and the babies turn out fine(physically) but alot of them have problems like ADD all types of things, is that a chance you want to take?

a little wine every once in a while will not hurt you. Might want to try drinking boone's farm, arbor mist. It's also good to sip on a little wine for half an hour when you can not keep anything down and then eat some dry toast.

Pregnant women should not drink or do drugs. You can choose to drink on the wrong day and have it effect the baby's development, it may be physical or mental. As you can not determine what is growing on what day just don't do it. If you can't live without drinking maybe you should put off having kids

They can, the question is "should they...?" Plenty of studies show that moderate drinking is ok, but plenty of experts say that there is no safe amount to drink and know that baby will be ok, and others say it's best to wait until after the first trimester when some of the most important things are being developed. Best bet would be to ask your own obstetrician, and go by their recommendations, since they are the ones who are taking care of your health needs and the baby's as well.

in small doses most doctors will tell you its ok because red wine contains loads of antioxidents. When I was pregnant with my son my doc recommended I have a small wine glass of red wine spritzer once a month. I didnt because I wasnt comfortable consuming alcohol while pregnant.
