Depends. Does this friend know that they still have it and need to return it? If so, don't loan them anything again. If not, a gentle reminder is enough, try saying, "Hey, I was thinking about wearing that sweater I let you borrow to the Christmas party. Can I get it back?"

Find a reason to visit them on their home ground, and mention that you've been needing a (fill in the blank). You have searched all over for it and just can't find it.
1. The freeloader coughs up the item and apologizes for having kept it for so long.
or...
2. They look confused and you sponatneously recall that you loaned them one and fake relief that it had been safe and not really lost.
OR...
3. "Just return the one I loaned you or buy me a new one." Followed by a menacing laugh.

Usually the first 2 will do fine but if it comes down to #3 don't loan to this person without a hostage... er deposit.

if this is a friend, then i'd tell that friend that they have violated the first commandment of friendship:
THOU SHALT RETURN TO THY FRIEND THAT WHICH THOU HAST BORROWED. it is on them and you are not out of place here, it is your "friend" who has violated the rules and your trust here.
if this is not a friend i'd go get whatever it is from them and tell them not to presume to borrow from you again.
good question, by the way. we all need to remember the first commandment of borrowing from friends

Depends...have you asked your friend for it back?

If no then ask.

If yes then keep asking.

I know it'll get annoying but if they don't return it ask them to replace it or be doomed to suffer all eternity without your stuff. Ha ha just messing.

Casually mention that you were looking for your "whatever", and couldn't find it, then you remembered that they had it. They may then admit they lost or forgot about the "thing". If it's an important "thing" to you, ask them straight out if they don't own up to it, otherwise, just forget about it.

If it is important to me, I would ask for it back.

If it isn't then, I'd forget about it . I wouldn't make a fuss.
