I have read several and enjoyed them, some more than others. It depends a lot on which you choose. There is nothing wrong with the medium, just as there is nothing wrong with drama on the stage or movies or regular novels or short stories. Graphic novels are a bit new on the scene, and the new is often criticized by the "old school." Don't let the elitist snobs inhibit your explorations! Also, "Graphic novels" is not a title merely for comics. They are a title for LONG comics! I read the graphic novel on 911, which was quite well done and helped me to understand the sequence of events better. This wasn't just comics, then; it was history!

Like any form of literature, there are graphic novels of both high and poor quality, as well as themes and stories to suit various needs. If you like them then you should read them.
Oftentimes people can become snobs in their area of expertise (like your teacher and her feelings toward graphic novels.) But after spending $40,000 on a degree a person walks away being good at 1 thing and s/he sometimes has to show this by putting others down for not sharing his or her tastes.
I will be a high school English teacher soon, and I can readily tell you that any literature that gets people reading and interested in a story or idea is a wonderful thing. I was fond of "The Sandman" series myself.

I'm a big fan of graphic novels and I think, personally, that sometimes they are a good change from novels. There are pictures (like a comic book), but some graphic novels' plot are just as intense or interesting as regular books. And instead of looking at a bunch of text, it is played out in a series of pictures (a bit like a movie).

Like any artform, there can be good graphic novels and bad graphic novels. I was fortunate to have Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" as my first graphic novel experience.
I think in order for a comic to work well as a "graphic novel" the pictures and words work in tandem and balance each other. If you can read only the words and get the story (or vice versa look at only the pictures and get the story) the comic is not using it's medium successfully.

I don't like the average graphic novel, but I enjoyed reading The Crow novel, which James O'Barr compiled from his comic book series.

The people who are obsessed about them (they'll start replying soon, I know it) need to back off and enter reality. But I think comic books are fine for spending a boring summer/winter day reading.
