My 10 month old had a very high fever of 103 - 104.3 last night and tylenol wasn't working so I took her to urgent care. She doesn't have an ear infection, urinary tract infection or infection of the blood. They gave her a shot of antibiotics to be safe and sent us home. Her fever is still just as high 24 hours later and I was curious if anyone knows how long antibiotics take to make any difference? She does have a follow up with her doc in the morn, but I thought maybe someone had some ideas.

They most likely gave your infant a cover-all, or broad-spectrum antibiotic (like Rocephin) intramuscular shot (most likely not intravenous) since they weren't able to find anything just to be safe like you said, and also help prevent any bacteria from taking advantage while your little one is fighting off a viral infection. The antibiotics won't do anything for a viral infection. However, there are antivirals out there, so your doc may look into that in the morning. Since her fever is still high I would say it's viral. I would maybe call and ask for a Rx for motrin and alternate giving tyenol and motrin for her fever (dosing by her weight). In the meantime, it's really important to make sure she's staying hydrated (pedialyte is good). Also, you can use cool washclothes on her head, neck for comfort and to help lower her fever too. good medication for it go to the doctor make sure it isnt tylenol and tell the doctor that its kinda expensive but it works good i should know had to take it all the time

give her motrin and try a luke warm bath and cool not cold wash clothes. and go to a regular er
