4/(a - 5) - 1/(5 - a)
= 4/(a - 5) + 1/(a- 5 ) = 5/(a-5) .

I bet you forgot parentheses in the denominator right?

4/(a - 5) - 1/(5 - a) =
4/(a - 5) - -1/-(5 - a) =
4/(a - 5) + 1/(a - 5) = 5/(a - 5)
