The PS3 itself, you have to plug into an AC outlet.
But if you mean the PS3 Sixaxis, then it's rechargeable battery operated, so you can play wirelessly. You recharge it via USB. Once the battery is dead, I think you need to buy another Sixaxis because you can't take out the battery.
