Spam is all the emails you receive usually from unknown senders that take advantage of mailing lists (they may get addresses from some web pages you have visited), and that contains advertising/information that you have not required.
It becomes a nuisance when they come in big volume!
But sometimes, you could get a message from someone you know (that is not a spam) in your Spam folder, if that person has sent that very same email to a long list of senders or if it contains words usually used by spams, so the system detects it as a Spam and send it to that folder (that's why I usually take a quick look at the content of my spam folder before sending everything to the trash...).
I consider this kind of advertisement an abuse, so I do not buy anything from them.

Plain and simple way of defining spam is Junk mail or link.
Spam originally was unwanted mail sent to multiple persons (which originally just Usenet group text) to sell or promote a product or service.
But now that we can add a link to an email(html), it is also spam to attach or embed a banner ad or link to an advertisement to an email or post on a networked group/newsgroup.
