The hard drive in my Dell Dimension 8250 died and I need a new one...I'm not sure what to get, an IDE ATA100 or ATA133?

You should have a ATA 100 HDD in that machine. You can use an ATA 133 HDD if you want, but it will run at the ATA 100 speed. The same is true for SATA 1.50 and SATA 3.0. If the mobo is set up for SATA 1.50 then you can install a SATA 3.0, but it will run at the slower SATA 1.50 speed.

I just checked and you should be able to use pretty well any new IDE drive. Depending on the ribbon cable you're using that goes from the hard drive to the motherboard you could be running at ATA-100 or ATA-133 or even the old ATA-33 (40 pin ribbon cable).

go to crucial.com and use there scanner it will tell u whats a good and cheap subsitute
