That you don't have to play monthly for?

The only MMORPG I can think of that you don't have to pay monthly for is Guild Wars. All you have to do is buy the game at the store, or pay for a download, and you're good to go.

The game is incredibly detailed and very pretty (yay for eye-candy), and the same can be said for the character customization. The creators also solved the "kill-stealing" problem, so there's no worries about morons swiping your stuff.

Also, if you're willing to try an older game, go ahead and try Diablo II and it's expansion, Lord of Destruction. You can probably buy this in the Battlechest, and that also includes a copy of the original Diablo for PC. It's a really fun game, even as old as it is, and still very popular. It's not really an MMO, but close enough. You can play single player, or play for free online or LAN.

Hope you find something.

The main MMO that you can buy in a store and not pay monthly fees for is Guild Wars, http://guildwars.com.

Here are a few online RPGs to check out that - for these you wouldn't buy them at the store, but you would download an installer or just play in your browser:

- Maple Story, http://mapleglobal.com

- Runescape, http://runescape.com

- FlyFF, http://flyff.gpotato.com

- Tantra, http://tanta.ph

And a couple games that I'd recommend (though you have to pay for them):

- World of Warcraft, http://worldofwarcraft.com (you can do a free two week trial to check it out)

- Ragnarok Online, http://ragnarokonline.com (you can do a free trial here as well)
