I agree with "bleed" on this. A 55 gallon tank is only large enough to house one oscar, and honestly that is pushing it. Oscars can grow huge (you want to consider the fish's adult size when stocking a tank, not the size it is when you purchased it), and like they said, produce A LOT of waste. Heavy duty filtration is a must, as well as frequent water changes as ammonia levels will be high.
That being said, Oscars are a very fun and interesting fish to own. Good luck!

A 55 gallon is OK for 1 oscar, but still not the best. They grow to around 14-18 inches, and produce a lot of waste. A 75 gallon is really the minimum for 1 oscar all alone but if you change 50% of the water EVERY week and use heavy filtration you can get away with it. Don't add anything other than 1 oscar though, not even other kinds of fish will work.

You can place two easily for now, but is best to consider a 100 gallon if you keep this number, otherwise one will do comfortably in your 55 gallon aquarium with GOOD filtration (meaning two filters for redundancy too).
As for other compatible fish, this can be difficult in the long term as the Oscar will out grow many fish it may do well with while stilll small. Also some other cichlids such as Red Devils will often kill the oscar as they reach maturity. I have kept Plecostumus with Oscars when they grow up together in your size aquarium. But generallly my success with mixed aquariums that have Oscars have involved 100 gallon or larger aquariums.
Here are a few fish I have kept with Oscars with appropriate sized aquariums:
* Jack Dempsey Cichlids
* Parrot Fish (Cichlids)
* Tinfoil barbs that grow up with them (usually started at a larger size)
* Blue Acara

you could technically have 55 inches of fish in it so I guess 19 or 20 but I wouldnt get more than 10 any fish that they can't swallow and other fish that aren't "fin-nippers" maybe some catfish variations however when they get bigger oscars like to "move" tank gravel around so don't plan on having the "perfect" looking tank. Oscars are really cool tho they are the closest to dogs that fish can be if that makes sense, you'll see definately a plecostamus. don't believe only one if well fed they won't "attack" each other. the fish will grow but if there are a lot of them they don't grow AS big, it's not like you wake up one morning and the fish are smashing up against each other like salmon spawning

you can put a couple in there with 2 sharks, and a plecosomisus(algae eater), and maybe a catfish. a silver dollar would be cool in there too, .
