If you are asking about the aquatic types of blood worms, they are found in river and lake sediments that have low levels of oxygen - like environments polluted with sewage. They can live in places where many other invertebrates cannot because they are loaded with hemoglobins that help draw oxygen out of the water. This is the same chemical that makes people's blood cells red.

The name is used for several unrelated forms. There is a group of marine worms in the genus Glycera which are known as bloodworms. Sometimes small red earthworms of various kinds are called bloodworms, especially by fishermen who use them for bait. Larvae of certain small flies, like midges, are called bloodworms. And finally there are parasitic worms which actually live in the bloodstream, but they are usually called schistosomes, not bloodworms.
