First off, I would ban her from wearing thong underwear. She doesn't need em anyway. Second, I suggest hard labor, something that fits the crime. Talk to the manager of the store, maybe she could clean their toilets at the end of the day? Ha ha. On a serious note, she should definitely be grounded for this. Your mother needs to impress upon her, that this is NOT okay. Punish her, and let her have her gifts. Any gift that contradicts her punishment should be put away until she has served her "sentence." She shouldn't be allowed to see her accomplice during her punishment either. She should be confined to her room, for the holidays, and start fresh in the new year. No phone, no computer, no fun, Christmas being the exception of course.

I think the question is why did your sister want to shoplift in the first place, especially thong underwear. The way you spoke about it, it makes it sound that your sister has stolen before. It's really great that she's changing and that she was able to pull her grades up, too! But your sister can't be stealing! It's wrong and it can land her in alot of trouble!
I think the best thing to do would be to make her volunteer in a thrift store or something, that way she can appreciate how hard people have to work for the clothes that they are able to buy. Or maybe she can get a part time job so she can afford to buy the things she wants. If she was worried about your mother disapproving of a thong, maybe your mom can talk to her about that...
GOOD LUCK!

ok here r ideas:
make a sandwich board out of cardboard and write on it "i got caut stealing thong underwear from Lord and Taylors" and put it on her and place her on the bussiest street corner near ur house or at the enterance of Lord and Taylors 4 bout 3 hrs!
or
bann her from internet, thongs, tv, ipod, cellphone, and phone 4 1 month( except christmas, let her use all of em on christmas)
or
during her school holiday volenteer her to feed the homeless over christmas break
or
get her a hard job that pays and tell he "if u really want the thongs pay 4 them urself, and i wont take no 4 an answer!"
just a couple of ideas u might consider choosing, or better yet on all the answers pick the punishment that r suitable and let her choose!!!
:O) hope i helped!!!

I'm always in favor or a good spanking but that not everybody is wild about that idea. You can always take away her cell phone, internet, have her stand on the corner with a sandwich board saying what she stole, she can get a part time job, do more chores around the house...and the list goes on. It's important to set her on the right path and let her know the consequences of her actions. Smart students can still go bad.

Your mom should let it go... tell her this is her warning and next time she will be grounded for a month and lose all privaledges... That means no computer, no tv, no cellphone, no house phone, no friends, no alcohol, etc...
Seriously, I got caught shoplifting too and my parents didnt do anything about it, they completely let it go, didnt even make threats and I havent done it since (and I was stealing over $500 worth of clothes in 1 day of shopping)... Sometimes giving the teen a chance to change and make good decisions on their own is a good idea...

i'm rather sorry to right here that. Are you particular it develop into 5 felonies and grand larceny? i wager it relies upon on the state yet i develop into continuously less than the impression that felonies were like murders and such, no longer some thing like shoplifting. besides, i'd employ a lawyer in the adventure that your household can. someone that focuses on that style of crime...

Your mom could have her help serve Christmas dinner to
homeless people, if there is shelter near you . Contact the Salvation Army or a church.
She could also have adopt a gramma or grampa from a nursing home, which she could read to or write letters for.
