It was the first governing document of the United States once the original colonies broke away from England. It was later replaced by the constitution. Wikipedia has a fairly good article for more specifics:

The Articles were the document under which the 13 original states of the Early US lived under, which existed as a very loose confederacy of states with a weak Congress. The states ruled themselves.
In 1797, the Constitution would replace the Articles as the Document that would become the law of the land and strenthen our federal government, taking power away from the states and uniting them into a untion.

Yeah, use the wikipedia to do your homework for you- not Yahoo, youre much more likely to find reputable answers there. Anyway it didn't last because it was too weak. The Constitution ties the states together much more strongly.

Haley, you are another one who wants others to do your homework for you!
You are also grounded and I want you to write 100 times, "I will not ask people on Yahoo Answers to do my homework for me."
I expect that to be handed in to me tomorrow!
