Thank you! I'm an atheist and honestly, I don't know why the heck there's still religion in this world. Ok, I understand why there's a need for it but it's all a fairy tale and I KNOW I'll be getting thumbs down on this answer but I have so many reasons why I don't believe in "god" and they're pretty logical.

Interesting way of putting it! Never heard religion described as a sewer before. Although corrupt, I think it offers comfort and security to a lot of people. anyway, that a different subject. Atheists have a bad name I think because they are a lot of them are more preachy and in your face with their opinions that religious people! Fair enough, they don't believe in religion but it doesn't mean they can't respect other people's beliefs. I find a lot of Atheists seem to know more about religions than the religious anyway. I actually think Atheism is becoming a type faith where people worship themselves rather than a god and try to convert everyone to their way of thinking. Most out spoken Atheists seem very bitter.

You are the person who can best answer this question.

I would venture to guess that most people don't view religion as the sewer of humanity, and most people also don't have any problems with atheists. So the question becomes, why do YOU think so little of religion, and why do you think so little of atheists?

Faith in something you cannot see is more than anything you can be.
As a Christian, I hate the fact that Atheists are given a bad name. I hope that they are treated better and not made fun of or discriminated against.
But I dont think saying "Merry Christmas" is offensive.
Religion can be blamed for a lot of problems in the world.
But I also believe that without religion and without a strong sense of purpose and identity, chaos would be able to insue easily across the world.

I think the entire reason for why atheists are looked upon as bad is because free thinking is looked upon so badly in society. Free thinking is where alot of people make their fortunes, free thinking is where alot of people show the world that God is not needed to make their decisions. I myself don't believe in God, in the typical form. I believe there are no gods that dictate what you do, how you live, how you live ETC. I do believe that Jesus existed, but only as a man, and not the son of God.

In those times, people were gullable, they needed hope, and that hope was to make Jesus into something god-like, or miraculous. Jesus was just a very smart person, Genius like qualities and he enjoyed helping people. The Bible was written by scholars, some of the very smartest people of that time, to give people a reason to go on living, and a reason to have religion.

What religion is today is a mystery to me, somewhere along the lines it has been totally misconstrued. To fully understand the universe and its meaning is to boraden your horizons, think for ones-self. To have the ability to judge for yourself, look to yourself for the answers to your life and not allow anyone to tell you otherwise. To me this is the definition of an Atheist, to understand what you want and need in life, and not be told, you should do this, you shouldn't do that, ETC. Once you have a firm grasp on this concept do you fully understand what an Atheist actually is.

Sure there's some that want to bash god and the people who believe in God, to me these people are not Atheists, just hecklers and nothing more. I respect people who believe or want to believe in whatever they want, so long as I'm given the same respect in being Atheist. It's no different than compromise, if only people would learn compromise and not try to force something on someone that they don't want to know about.

The only reason why there are still Christians is because they are afraid of going to "Hell". Without it there would without a doubt be NO Christians. Because atheists are affiliated with a "devil", they are given a bad name.

I recently went agnostic and my brother now thinks I'm the devil.

It's amazing how much a Church can brainwash a 13 year old.

i don't really know abot religion being a sewer, but that's beside the point. there's nothing wrong with being an athiest. it's almost like a belief in itself. but many people get offended, because they fell that by being an athiest, one is telling a religious person that they're wrong or that their god is nonexistent.
