a new hard drive is what you need. They don't cost that much, check to see what size you have and try to replace with the same size. Do you own your own copy of windows. If so have a friend help you swap it out and start installing windows and all your other soft ware

Its hard because all the instructions needed for the computer to boot up or turn on are stored on the hard drive. You could probably put the commands into your external hard drive but I'm not sure if that would work. Just get a new on its can't be that expensive.

It's possible if your system bios allows for booting to a removable device. You will need to boot first to your Windows CD and see if it recognizes your external drive as a bootable device. But truthfully your system will not work as well, or as fast or as consistently booting from an external drive.

With the prices of internal hard drives so low, you should get a new one... 40-50 bucks will get you a new hard drive

You can use the data that's on the external hard drive, but it most cases you cannot boot from an external hard drive. You need a bootable hard drive or an internal hard drive depending on your motherboard. Either an IDE or SATA. Make sure you keep all your data on your external hard drive, you can easily move it onto your new hard drive.

But the thing that actually scans the disk isn't in your external drive. All the external drive does is back up your data, so that if you do get another computer, all the information backed up on it will work fine on the new PC.

It depends. I doubt if the BIOS will allow you to boot from an external drive, ask the guy in the computer store.

Unfortunately no, your external hard drive uses a USB connection and your system needs to be booted to use it. Without your main hard drive it's a bit difficult to boot the system.

Yes, but it is best if you just buy another hard drive so you can install Windows. otherwise you will have to delete everything on your external hard drive and start over anyway.

You have to run your operating system on it and make it your primary hard drive, change boot sequence and all but i would reccommend that you just get a new internal one... they are better than USB ones for everyday use. It can work... let them do it for you.

try operating the upload Hardware wizard in administration Panel and word if it detects it. USB ports can play up. I have a USB printer and each and each from time to time it says my printer isn't detected and that i must reinstall it - or swap the flexibility on and stale and finally it sees it.
