Adware and spyware is software that runs on the Microsoft Windows operating system, that falls into a category of "Malware". Other operating system, such as Mac OS X or Linux, do not have Adware or Spyware problems.
Adware does as the name suggests - it is software that forces you to look at endless adverts.
Spyware is similar - it tracks your computer usage, usually so that the adware can show you adverts it thinks will "interest" you!
It comes from ruthless individuals who care nothing for individuals privacy. Usually they are out to make money from you.
Infection can happen simply by connecting a Microsoft Windows computer to the internet. You don't even have to open a web page. This is why you must always protect Microsoft Windows computers with a firewall, all updates from Microsoft, and anti-virus software.

Adware or advertising-supported software is any software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertising material to a computer after the software is installed on it or while the application is being used.
Spyware is computer software that collects personal information about users without their informed consent. The term, coined in 1995 but not widely used for another five years, is often used interchangeably with adware and malware (software designed to infiltrate and damage a computer).

Spyware can come from several ways, for example with emachines it has been found to be loaded up at the factory. Or sometime you may just pick it up from surfing the web and click on something that you did not mean to.
What it often does is makes it easier for people to track your surfing to see what websites you are going to.
Where it is in your registry key area in Windows, very hard to go through and delete on your own as you may delete the wrong item.
I would use Adaware by Lavasoft, I trust it and it does a good job, sometimes downloading some others out there you may do a scan and once it has completed its scan it asks you to pay.

They come from innocent looking free games that you download. They install background programs that constantly pop up ads that can't be stopped with a popup blocker.
