Your local library might have an online homework help thing. Here's a page that lists websites relating to the book: http://www.emints.org/ethemes/resources/S00001512.shtml

I'm not really sure what you mean by a character tree. Can you just put Janie in the center and connect everyone to her, explaining the relationship?

Were you told how to construct a "character tree"? If so, you should do it that way. If not, I found this description of a character tree:
"Have your students draw a chart of characters in a book, then draw lines between characters describing their relationships. One line could be labeled "best friends," another line could be labeled "rivals" and of course you can include family lines as well -- "cousin," "father," and so forth. Use different colored markers for different types of lines, or one color for all the lines emanating from a particular character."

So what you would need to do is to write down all the characters in the book, scattering their names on a sheet of paper. Then use different colored lines to connect them, labeling the lines "friend", "daughter", "sister", etc. If you are artistic, you could draw a picture of the different characters instead of just using their names. If I were doing it, I would put the main character (Janie) in the center of the paper, and then write the other characters' names in a circle around her. Then you could draw lines from Janie to the other characters and label the lines "friend", "daughter" or whatever. Then you could draw lines between the characters also, showing their relationships.

I hope this helps.
