I can't believe the disrespect being shown by some of you co cks. Yea Cannavaro deserved the award this year more than Zidane but let's get something abundantly clear. Zidane is the ONLY player worthy of being meentioned alongside Maradona and Pele and believe me I know of and have seen action of some of the greatest players ever, too many to list. I really think cannavaro is a world class player, but he couldn't lace Zidane's fucki ng right boot.Cannavaro is a superstar, Zidane is a legend ie all time great. Big distinction
Oh and to "Mrs Materazzi", well of course you are gonna say Zidane doesn't deserve it. Ever heard of that term impartiality?

I actually supported Italy during the World Cup and it wasn't a big upset for me. I am British but I have always liked Italy, and France cos of Zizou likes

you've got it right, i've been searching for that word. appalling, indeed. beats me why zizou keeps getting dragged into this.cannavaro should be judged on his own merits, not bec. he either compares favorably or unfavorably to zizou. the only Qs that need answering should be: is Cannavaro the best player in the world? and if indeed the award traditionally goes to a player on the WC winning team, did he stand out from the rest of his team mates? sorry to differ from you but my answer is: NO, and NO. The 1st requires no explanation, no way is he the best for the last 12 mos. as for the 2nd , it only needs to be said that during the WC, even the Italians themselves couldn't decide...their "best" player was an entire laundry list: buffon, pirlo, cannavaro, nesta, gattuso, grosso, materazzi, etc etc. it was only when cannavaro won the ballon d’or and made the fifa short list that the choice became unanimously Cannavaro. now what does that tell us? it's so convenient to say that since it was the fifa members themselves who voted for cannavaro then surely he is the best 'cuz these guys certainly know more than us. sorry but i don't buy that stuff. anyway, I’ve been reading the other threads and so far someone has yet to come up with a convincing defense for cannavaro's having “deservedly” won the prize.

Well, even though I am a big fan of the Italian soccer (or futbol) team, I do think it was wrong of Materazzi to call Zidane's mother "what he called her." It is even too disrespectful to say on Y!A. Zidane is a great player, I agree with you, but Italy won, and we can't change that now. Just cool down a little. I know it's a big upset for you, but realize that what you said is right, and your argument is perfectly understandable.

Zidane is an amazing player. He was te reason that France got to the world cup finals, and was the reason they beat Brazil in the semis. It really is a shame that almost no one looks past what happened in the finals onto the other great things he did in his career. Its a shame his career ended on such a negative note.

Brother, Don't loose any sleep over this. Zidane acheivments will proudly speak of him. Cannavaro would live three lives to perhaps be able to get the third of Zidane's talent.

yes true, i dont like how people disrespect him. i am happy canna won the award, he diserved it. it is mean how people are saying that he is a devil and stuff like that. he is a good soccer player and a good guy. treat people the way you want to be treated!! no one should disrespect anyone!!
