Actually California has seen over 300 tornadoes since 1950, although that only averages out to a little more than 5 per year. Of course most of these tornadoes were weak and short lived, and no one has ever died from a tornado in California. Twisters are not that uncommon in the Los Angelas Basin, and also occasionally occur in the Central Valley, including the greater Fresno area.

California Tornadoes

There can be tornadoes anywhere if the conditions are right. We get them here in the central valley in CA. It's when low pressure meets high pressure and we have had a lot of really weird weather in the last few days and I am not surprised. And no - earth boy - they have been going on forever and pollution has little to do with it. Why do the worst tornadoes occur in places where for the most part - pollution is not not that big of an issue - and no, tractors and cows don't count. California doesn't usually experience the really nasty destructive tornadoes that go on in Texas and the Midwest. I've lived in Kansas and it isn't fun when you see that little "W" in the corner of the TV screen or spend 4 hours in the root cellar waiting it out.

There are "few" tornadoes in California because it is a semi-hilly region. Kansas, for example, gets many more tornadoes because its completely flat. Also, the jet stream follows a pattern usually through Washington, and visits to California much less than its northern neighbors.

However, because of changing weather patterns due to global warming, expect more severe storms in California, or severe drought, one of the two or perhaps both, in the coming 5-30 years.

There's few tornados in Cali because the warm and cold air masses that trigger tornados rarely meet there. More often than not it happens in the Central Plains, what is known as Tornado Alley. And to correct epicwolf, there aren't any hurricanes in Cali because the ocean current running next to the state is cold, not the warm water that hurricanes need to form and remain intact.

Tornadoes can occur anywhere. We even had a couple here
in Connecticut. Not to long ago I heard that one had touched down
in England. All that is necessary is the right weather conditions.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and have a nice day.

Thank you very much, while you're up!!

California would have small tornadoes surely... In Australia we generally don't have tornadoes but we still have the odd small one

Tornadoes can happen ANYWHERE, as long as the atmospheric conditions are right.
It's also a myth that tornadoes don't hit cities. Just ask anyone from Nashville, TN... or Xenia, OH.

california doesnt typically have the same weather pattern as in much of the midwest. california doesnt really get warm humid air mixed with cold dry air, like the midwestern states get, due to the fact that our mountains helps block off the cold and warm humid air. eventhough california is not known to get tornadoes, there has been several times it has occured there. fortunately, most of them were very weak and most of them occured off the coast(known as waterspouts) and there were no considerable damages caused by them.
