It would depend on the age of the child.

All children should be supervised and not just turned loose with a puppy-all puppies nip a bit and all small children are a bit rough.

Beagles are popular with families with kids-they are sturdy and easy going-but tend to be a little stubborn and hard headed. Same with Westies.

Basically, I would suggest getting a dog that fits YOUR lifestyle as the parent you will be responsible for the care of the dog. An active, camping lifestyle would indicate perhaps a Lab or a Golden Retriever. If you live in an apartment and work 12 hours a day, a cat might be a better choice.

Chihuahuas and Yorkies are really only appropriate for older children-they are very delicate.

Maybe you should make a list of the activities you will want to do with your dog and your child and let that list be your guide.

Well, I would not necessarily get a puppy. You can try to go to the local ASPCA and check with them. They can normally match a dog both to your child's age as well as to your living situation and dog experience.

Otherwise, you might want to check www.petplanet.co.uk
They have a dog breed quiz. You fill out the details and it will then recommend a breed that suits your lifestyle.

Before getting the puppy, invest in Jan Fennell's book " The Dog Listener" and/or "The Practical Dog Listener". Both are great to teach you what to expect and how to live with a new dog in a healthy and content way from day 1.

In the end - hope you have fun with your new pet!

It really depends on the age. No matter what pet you get make sure you don't leave them unsupervised. I've seen some children choke their puppies (on accident since they don't know how to act exactly). Golden retrievers are good family pets. They are so playful and friendly.
I used to have one. I remember one day a couple of kids jumped into our backyard and instead of growling or something, our dog was playing with the them.
It also depends how much time and patience (since its a puppy) you can give it. And if he would have space to run aound. Hope that helps!

I would not recommend a yappy dog like a Chihuahua or a big dog. If it is a small child (1-8) I would probably get a laid back dog that is sweet, not to hiper, yet playful. Mabey a boston terrier. They are sweet & fairly easy to train! If your child is a little older (9-up) then you could still get a boston terrier! To help you out heres a list.
1-8
boston terrier, pug, cocker spaniel, dachshund

9-up
any of the dogs listed above, beagle, snouzer, or a sweet mix breed.

It depends on the age of your child, your property, and the amount of time you/your husband/your child can spend with the dog. Labradors, retrievers, labradoodles, German shepherds, greyhounds, newfoundlands, and weimaraners are good large breed dogs.

Border collies, Australian shepherds, and spaniels (of pretty much any kind) are good medium-sized breeds.

Jack russels, Boston terriers, beagles, corgis, and fox terriers are loveable small breeds.

Just know what temperament the breed is; the more hyperactive breeds out of the aforementioned (those that require more exercise than a working family might have time for) are greyhounds, German shepherds, Australian shepherds, border collies, the larger spaniel breeds, Boston terriers, jack russels, and fox terriers.

Good luck!

Do not get a little "yappy dog" unless its a dosile one.
those dogs tend to jump and they could hurt your child my accident
Mans best friend is the dog , and they have proven that the golden lab. or Golden Retriever are always a great pet to have for a child. they will take care of you and the child.
BUT even regular sized dogs can hurt your child. you would be best to get the animal fixed asap. if you get a cat... not the best idea.. depending on how old the kid is.

there are alot of breeds of dogs that do well with children, but also dogs have their own individual personalitys so keep that in mind also. after your initial research of breeds as per kid friendly, i would also recomend looking at differant breeds potiental health problems, lengths of puppy "faze", and ease of training. there are many good websites out their, a good begining one is breeders.net this will not only show breeders in your area per dog breed but has info on the breeds themselves , good luck
