Dying is the ultimate relaxation technique!

Theory #1: If we did, deep down, we wouldn't be so pumped up on religion (religion as a balm to help with the denial of the inevitability of death).

Theory #2: And then again, that would explain why we would, deep down, look forward to the big sleep (the "gimme heaven" attitude).

Theory #3: Unless of course you're a cynic like me, that has concluded that I picked the wrong shrub to worship (the "it's all mumbo-jumbo" attitude).

Theory #4: I wanna die. Pleeeeze help me doc! (The "gimme a morphine overdose" attitude.)

Theory #5: I guess I'll commit first degree murder. (The "gimme a Thiopental Sodium overdose in about 15 years" attitude.)

Well, that was fun. Thx.

I think weak and sick people most definitly, for them it is probably a relief then the eternal peace!

Healthy individuals, who enjoy life, feel life and live life I reckon are most probably eternal optimists and do not lose a thought on this theme.
Then again as one gets older and colder, friends and relatives die around you, your own health deteriorates, other problems in life/family arise, the saddening daily news etc...one revises his/her view towards death! (As we are all different, there are very many different views and fears).

Looking forward to death depicts for me the format of future suicidal tendencies and if this is the case with anyone, then I strongly recommend a visit to a good psychotherapist.
Good question though! I lost my Dad 2 years ago and I have thought alot about this theme since then

Good luck!

i have found that most elderly people are either ready or hoping to die. my great grandad well off, comfortable in his flat and still had a perfect memory at 86 yet every time i used to VISiT him whilst growing up he would talk about being ready die (not in those words). i truly believe he looked forward to it. once you reach a certain age and health surely life becomes depressing no matter what family you have left or how comfortable you are. i would like to see my two children a success in life preferably settled, enjoy a good few decades with my partner then croke it about 55........ becoming unwell and sitting staring out the window alone does not appeal to me.

I think we do. The Answer to all our Questions, The Return to the Source. The Undiscovered Country. The Great Adventure. We may not acknowledge it, esp. when we are young and healthy, but it is there, and when we are old and infirm we definitely feel it, if only as a escape from our pain and feebleness. But it is more than that - I think we feel it as a desire to become One again, to rejoin whatever our personal vision of God might be.

i don't know. Are we all dying to live? Or living to die? personally? maybe but only b/c i wonder what it will be like, b/c there's no research on it, no one can tell you about it. Out of curiousity yes people could be looking forward to death. Curiosity did kill the cat.

My friend. I have been very, very close to death and its not worth looking forward to.

One thing it did give me was the importance of life and how you should enjoy every minute of it.

Enjoy it while you can. Nobody has proved you get a second chance.

yep. i used to have a notice on my wall at work that read 'death is the 5 minutes of peace and quiet that u have waited your entire life for' lol - not quite sure why it said 5 mins, coz u are dead a long time, but the sentiment was correct ! i guess most of us are hoping like mad that there is a better life out there after our time on earth ends...... and no, i'm not a religious person.....

have you recently read freud? you know, even he couldn´t explain what he meant by death instinct other than the well-known explanation that we long for the "homeostazy" which is typical before life emerges and after it ends, a final cemetery for all our impulses from the unconscious. but doesn´t psychoanalysis have lots of unproven theories? i firmly believe this is one of them.
nice to think abaout it though...

I've become extremely unimpressed with this world and by that of coarse I mean the people in it (present company accepted) not the planet which is fighting for its life, so it can't come soon enough for me.
