if you have a map that you need to fill out than look over it and go down the line or across what ever works. memorize the place in your head. think of shapes that look like that country (Chile looks like a chili pepper, Brazil is the largest its capital is almost like its name, Peru's capital is Lima and there are lots of llamas in Peru). The order of the countries left to right are Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. If it is a test where you just put the country and the capital then write all of the countries down on a sheet of paper. Then write down all of the capitals on another sheet. Go back and forth saying the capital when you look at the country name and the other way around. That is what I do and I can usually learn it in 15 minutes.
You can also go to graphicmaps.com It has tests on line and maps of the countries and a separate one with the capitals.

First, do you know your learning style?
If you are a visual learner
a) typing everything out and looking over it would be good
b) writing it down over and over again would be good
If you are an auditory learner
a) repeat them aloud to yourself, over and over
b) record them on tape and listen to them right before you go to bed
I have heard this really helps you remember them, because when you go to sleep, typically what you last think about appears in your dreams. While you are sleeping, your mind actually functions a lot. When they say, "sleep on it," they really do mean it. When you sleep, your mind processes things and sometimes when you wake up in the morning you will come up with a solution to a problem. Cool, huh? :)
If you are a kinesthetic/ tactile learner, there isn't quite as much you could do to help yourself, except for maybe looking at map with the places and the capitals on it.
One study skill that seems to transcend all learning styles is studying flashcards. It helps almost anyone, no matter what your learning style.

Buy a globe that speak out each countries and their capitals and also some important things to know about that country.
Actually it is for kids to study and learn about the world but I find it very easy to memorize than looking at the book.
If you are strong on either visual or hearing or both then it will work well with you. Good Luck^^

Get illustrations. We remember things visually more easily. I suggest a photo of the leader (we remember faces more than anything else), a cut out of the country, and label them. Make flash cards like this.
Visual learning helps memory increase by 50%. Make flashcards like this as previously suggested.
Teaching this to a study buddy will increase your memory retention by 80%
