False, because some automatics can be locked into a gear, making the tach more valuable :)

they can also be used as a diagnostic tool

Completely false, besides the obvious fact that it only shows you at what rp your engine is running, that one single piece of information can tell you many things that are valuable not only in a manual, but an automatic also.

1. It tells you at what rpm your engine is idling at. This can be helpful as every engine has a correct idle speed that needs to be sustained. An idle that is different that the correct idle speed may be indicating a serious problem.

2. As you accelerate, you can observe your engine rpm rise. This occurence and different things that happen during this indicate many different things. Every car has a ideal shift time, and this can show you if your transmission is shifting at the correct time. If it's not, this can indicate a serious problem with your transmission. This gauge can also show indications of a transmission that is stuck in gear, not shifting, etc.

These are only 2 of many reasons this gauge is particularly useful.

False, although most newer cars have a rev limiter to help you (not keep) from blowing up your engine your tachometer can be used to see where the engine red-lines. Red-line is the point where you start causing excess wear, somewhere after that the rev-limiter kicks in. When that happens, that's a bad thing, unless you don't like your car.

Drive an automatic in the mountains, especially on high mountain passes, etc. You will see just how valuable a tachometer can be.

TRUE IF THE SHIFT LEVER IS IN DRIVE

MOST SHIFTERS HAVE 1 2 3 D

IF YOUR DEAF OR RADIO IS TO LOUD AND YOU CANT HEAR YOUR ENGINE ABOUT TO BLOW UP IN FIRST GEAR DOING 80 THEN IT IS VERY helpful
