I'm trying to avoid sweets. He's at the age where he understands Christmas now. : )

I think matchbox cars are the most popular. they have some really cool remote control ones at radio shack.

Everything's a $ has some really cool puzzles and stuff for kids.

sidewalk chalk

baby Einstein stuff (Cd's)

classical music Cd's (probably your favorite)

a recorder (like a small flute)

sesame street stuffed animals

m&m stuffed animals

special non-spill cups that are not baby cups

cool socks with jingle bells and stuff that makes noise

flash cards of numbers/colors/people (fireman, doctor, school teacher. good vs bad people)

books are always good

cookies/granola bars/fruit roll-ups (my personal favorite)

oranges/apples/misc fruit

baseball cap (his size)

coins from different countries (i met this little boy this past week, and he had some coins from mexico and he told me about them... his mom said that they had an entire drawer full of them and they tell him about the countries that they come from and show him where the countries are on a globe... he said that they were his favorite toy)

Playdoe, Silly Putty, Art stuff like crayons, markers, paint, a rosery, a mini book, a candy cane (I no your trying to stay away from sweets but....), Hot wheels, little action figures all of that stuff.

Matchbox cars are great, small and cheap. Also Thomas trains are very popular for that age. Crayons, play-doh, stickers....

possibly little toy cars, or some other random toy, bubbles are always interesting to kids *but he might be kinda young for that* stuffed animals (just some random ideas)
