If a woman smokes marijuana how long does she have to wait to breastfeed again?

Should she pump it out before breastfeeding again?

Obviously, by posting this question, you know that any drugs in the mother's system will be secreted in her breast milk to the nursing baby. Who can say if it's safe after 12 hours, 24 hours, or 30 days? Just don't take the risk of passing all the possible chemicals that the pot could be laced with to your child. First rule of parenting: To love and protect ones child. Second: Personal pleasures, like getting high on illegal substances while caring for the child, contradicts the first rule.

It is absolutely ok for her to continue breastfeeding. I was sent home from the hospital with a pamphlet about breastfeeding and it says to wait 6 hours before breastfeeding after smoking marijuana.

If your concern is the health of the baby then you should know that there is no real evidence that marijuana is particularly harmful to babies, even when it is consumed by mothers in quantities that would be many times the typical consumption in the US.

There are tens of millions of people who have smoked marijuana in the last few decades in the US, and probably at least several million nursing mothers. There is simply no evidence of any epidemic of problems with babies as a result.

It would be wise and prudent for women who are pregnant or nursing to avoid all recreational drugs of any type. However, there is no evidence that an occasional joint will harm the baby.

You can find a ton of research on marijuana and the health effects at http://duglibrary.org/schaffer

I haven't seen a single helpful answer on here. The only advice I have is to do what research you can yourself and ignore these people. Seems that every one of them has misconceptions about marijuana.
It does not make you a druggie, a loser, or a bad parent.

Whatever you do, try to make an educated decision on what is best for your babe. Good luck.

i know that with alcohol the woman can continue breastfeeding after a certain # of hours. but i don't know about marijuana, its not worth the chance, so i wouldn't smoke the marijuana till my child is weaned from the breast.

marijuana is as bad as alcohol and cigarettes. marijuana is not as bad as cocaine or other drugs.

As Marijuana stays in your system for up to 3months there is no sure way to avoid it affecting your baby or milk supply, also my nephew became addicted while breastfeeding and had very bad behavioural problems cause by the addiction which never really improved, marijuana can worsen affects of things such as Bi polar disorders, (bi polar is often miss diagnosed as ADD OR ADHD) there for can cause bad behaviour in very young children. Hope this helps

If she intends on breast feeding at all, she is a fool to be doing marijuana at any time. For one thing it is bad for the baby, second thing is if something happens to baby, mommy and daddy will probably being going to jail and last but certainly not least, protective services can and probably will take the baby away from you both and place it in a foster home. So, which is more important to that woman, her childs health and possession of her baby or no baby and possession of marijuana charge. So it should really be a no brainer for a real Mom to figure out, if not maybe you need to figure it out for her.

THC stays in your bloodstream for 30-60 days. I'm not sure how efficiently it is transmitted to breast milk, and it's not exactly the kind of question you can ask your doctor. I don't have anything against pot, but to safeguard your kid's health and development, put down the joint until he or she is old enough to be weaned.

If she's gonna smoke weed, and breasts feed, she should pump and dump! What she should do, is feed her baby, and then smoke right after and then, wait like an hour and then pump her milk and dump it. Weed passes through breast milk VERY quickly!

For all these people out there, it's NOT the end of the world! Do some research like I did before you answer the question!!
