The X in Christmas, in the greek spelling of Christ the first Letter is an X, so for an easy abbreviation, people started Putting the X for Christ instead of spelling out the word.

Χριστο is the greek word for Christ, they just used the first letter.

Christmas is sometimes shortened to Xmas, an abbreviation that has a long history. In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ (Χριστός). Since the mid-sixteenth century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ.

Xmas

Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents a Greek chi, the first letter of , “Christ.” In this use it is parallel to other forms like Xtian, “Christian.” But people unaware of the Greek origin of this X often mistakenly interpret Xmas as an informal shortening pronounced (ksms). Many therefore frown upon the term Xmas because it seems to them a commercial convenience that omits Christ from Christmas.

Many theories in this. For one, yule is basically basically a shortening of Christmas. A in demand style of persons have faith that 'yule' replaced right into a thank you to de-Christianize Christmas. by utilising needless to say removing 'Christ' from the party, yule turns right into a extra wide-unfold party : an indicator occasion dedicated to partying and presents. infrequently what the unique meaning of Christmas is. so which you may desire to assert that yule is a denial of Christ in this party.

It's because of the Greek "chi" which looks like an X in the Greek letters..... and is the first letter of the word "Christos" , Christ. I guess people use it as shorthand for Christ-mas and just use the first letter of His title....In Greek Christos and in Hebrew Mashiac ..both meaning "Annointed One".

maybe its because the crist in cristmas sounds like "criss"
and there is a saying "criss cross", and if you CROSS something out then you put an X thru it. so.... it became Xmas.
