Ignore the people who say you NEED lessons. Lessons are overrated, becuase if you take lessons, or just learn from books, you will start to think of music mathematically. And when you do that, you will think of it as a math problem, or something technical, as if there is only one answer, or one solution. when the real answer is, there is billions of answers. Here is what you do: #1. Espose yourself to new music, and step out of your comfort zone. #2. Don't slave over the guitar. Take a break, and pick up another istrument for awhile. #3. Watch, watch, and watch some more. Watch what other people do and put your own spin on it. Oh, by the way, practice never hurt anybody.

Practice is the biggest thing. You have to REALLY want to learn, and push yourself to do so, not just say you're going to learn the guitar and then only practice for half an hour each week.
In my opinion it helps to have an instructor because then you actually learn musical theory, however there are many great self taught musicians. Just because you aren't taking classes doesn't mean you won't be a good guitar player.
I just started playing this year and I can assure you I am not a naturally musical person (you know how some people just seem to have the natural talent?). I was, however, really determined to learn and I practiced for at least an hour each day.....everyone says I'm pretty good for someone that just started.
So all I can say is, you really have be determined to learn and practice every day. Don't push yourself to play such hard stuff at first. I know it's kind of lame to play simple songs at first but everyone has to start off somewhere. Hey, if someone like me can get the hang of it, you can too

Practice, practice, paractice! Like anything else, you want to be good at it, it has to become second nature to you. Getting used to stretching your fingers like you've never had to before takes a little while. It takes time to toughen up your finger tips too so they quit hurting. Just keep at it. You'll get there. Some people just aren't cut out for it. I've known people over the years who practiced their whole lives and just didn't get any better. I've known guys in bands that weren't even that great of guitar players. You are what you make it. There are hundreds of courses and tips and tricks out there. But if you don't practice, you just won't get it, Good Luck.

You can go to music shops and get a book learning how to play.
Other than that, you just have to practice..

Practice scales, this will loosen your fingers and get you used to the fretboard. Your little pinky finger will take some time to get some strength in it, it comes with practice.
The more you practice, the better you will get.
Never give up and good luck to you.

I always remember what Joe Walsh would say when people asked, "Joe, how do I get to Carnegie Hall?"
He would always reply (Hold your nose when you say this aloud), "Practice, practice, practice."
Short and to the point. Now Joe will kick my butt if/when he finds out I posted this.
