Also how to prevent them from happening in the first place. I've had to throw away several of my loaf pans and muffin tins because of this. Do you know if it's safe to use them?

1. Same thing happened to me...I went to aluminum..never had the problem again...

2. To clean..scrub with a fine steel wool.. Wash, dry..then put on a light film of veg oil and bake at 400 deg for 30 min.. It should coat and season the pans.

Get the water hose and a green scrub sponge.(the ones they sell for teflon pots) Allow the water to flow as you scrub the pans..... You will see the rust flowing off with the water(orange in color). Dry the pans as much as you can with dry towels. Then allow the pan(s) to dry to its natural state. This next step is important: Spray on some Pam or any other spray on oil and
watch your color in your pan(s) change beautifully. After the oil soaks in for a while you can wipe it off gently. The trick is to leave some of the oil on and in the cast iron. . If it does happen again repeat steps. Use the same steps also on your cast iron pots and don't be afraid to use soap and water on them and on the pans if you choose. When dry the oil will do the trick again. You can use regular cooking oil also, by rubbing it in with a cloth. Good Luck!

we've been using them for years, to bad you can't send us your old ones. Anyhow, clean them before you use them, scour the rust out and then use them.

use a scouring pad (brillo) to clean them, and make sure they are completely dry before putting them away.
